Correggio, Jupiter and Io, early 1530s, of Federigo Gonzaga’s pleasure chamber, Palazzo Ducale, Mantua

  • placed in Plalzzo Ducale
  • Cravaggio was asked to paint a series on jupiter
  • Palazzo Ducale was a more formal environment
  • Jupiter is a nebulous cloud that kisses Io
  • The soft, sombre colors are more appropriate for the formal palace
  • But the subject is not. Io is in ecstasy from Jupiter's kiss
  • The viewer is shown the extent of hey joy in fingers and toes
  • she is nude
  • there are no specific external influences
  • pays attention to texture and uses texture to show tempestuous scene
