Giulio Romano
1530 - 2
Sala de Giganti
- constructed for Charles V's 2nd visit to Mantua
- depicts courtly festivity he would design
- makes claims for self as an artist - competes with past artists
- Mantena's devices are used - crumbling architecture
- Makes claims for Frederico and Romano as better than their predessescors
- Reverbating accoustics and stone floor gives a sense of chaos to the room and mimics the artistic scene
- The giant with the horn is a reference to sound contributing the unsettling feeling of the room
- Imitates the trigyphs coming apart on the facade
- takes antique references and turns them on their head
- The space is meant to please the senses and employs some mannerism to achieve this.
Thanks for the informations! Is there any written source that you could suggest me to read about Sala dei Giganti? I'd be verry happy if you do, thanks. :)
