Titian, Rape of Europa, 1559-62, commissioned by Philip II of Spain

The Rape of Europa (1562) is a bold diagonal composition which was admired and copied by Rubens. In contrast to the clarity of Titian's early works, it is almost baroque in its blurred lines, swirling colors, and vibrant brushstrokes.

  1. - Jupiter transforms himself into bull
    - Uses diagonal quality to add drama
    - Extreme motion and movement, but still in the back areas
    - Darker quality to the painting
    - extreme movement to the whole painting

  2. -europa in pose of ecstacy
    -drapery barely covers her
-accompanied by companions of cupid; bottom one sitting on/riding a fish
-europa's family in the background watching her in 'horror'
-water falls into horizon & sky (it's almost merging into one another, becoming one)
-bit extreme patches of color to show instances of light
-europa=a venetian woman of high lineage in mythology
