Giulio Romano
Wedding of Cupid and Psyche
Plazzo del Te
Mantua
Begun 1525
- Refer to previous post for details of Palazzo del Te
- The painting turned the propriety of his mothers court on its head
- Gods are drunk and in amorous states
- Appollo is being served by the Muses, when he is normally supposed to subdue them
- This was symbolically significant
- exotic animals are present and a leafy tree
- Bacchus is drunk
- The Credenza is crowded with expensive temporary cutlery
- messy sheets allude to lovemaking
- The hooved beds recall the lusty nature of satyrs
- The presence of the dog, too signifies lust
- Food: adds a carnality to the current scene
I have nothing more to add than what has already been ascribed.
